Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

Attack on Titan (in Japanese Shingeki no Kyojin) is a japanese manga written by Hajime Isayama. It also has an anime adaptation, which is better known than the manga its-self.

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest Titans. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a Titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a Colossal Titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller Titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is murdered and eaten. Eren vows that he will exterminate every single Titan and take revenge for all of mankind.

The story continues to follow Eren and Mikasa, along with their friends, as they join the scouts and fight against the titans.

ABOUT

The Walls

The Walls were built more than a century ago, when humanity was brought to the edge of extinction at the hand of the Titans. In response to this looming threat, the humans made huge Walls to protect their last stronghold. The Walls reach about 50 meters in height and reach four or five times a human's height below the ground, and is rumored to be as strong as bedrock.

There are three walls, each one smaller than the other.

The outermost wall is Wall Maria. The poorer citizens of humanity live along this wall, since they are at greater risk of a Titan invasion.

The second one is Wall Rose and the inner most wall is Wall Sina. Wall Sina protects the kingdom where the king and higher class civilians live.

. The distance between each wall is 100-130km.

The Walls are too long to be guarded in their entirety. The tops of the Walls are lined with cannons, which can fire on approaching Titans, even though they are not particularly effective due to the Titan's regeneration abilities. To account for this, each one has four towns on their periphery. As Titans are drawn towards large concentrations of people, humanity can focus its defenses at these towns and not the rest of the Wall. These towns are where the poorer citizens of humanity live, since they are at greater risk of a Titan invasion.

The is a group of people named the Wall Cult who worship the walls and treat Maria, Rose and Sina as their godesses. The Wall cult are also involved in government affairs and have even prevented the installment of cannons or any other defensive mechanisms on the walls.

Very few people, apart from the Survey Corps, venture outside the walls. Those who leave without permision or try to escape into the outside land are killed.
